Regulatory Considerations


As of 1 January 2024, a significant change is on the horizon. The NSW Government will initiate Clause 58, known as “Audiometric Testing,” of the NSW WHS Regulation 2017. This means that starting from that date, a PCBU (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking) will be mandated to provide audiometric testing to workers who are frequently required to use personal protective equipment (such as hearing protection) due to exposure to noise levels that exceed the defined standard.


According to Victoria’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2017 (OHS Regulations), it is also crucial that audiometric screenings, or hearing tests, are conducted for all new staff members within three months of their commencement. This requirement extends to staff members who are new to working in environments with potentially hazardous noise levels or those handling equipment that produces such noise.
